Guitar No. 3 (aka, The Blue Dragon)
Materials:
This is the first guitar I made at my home shop. In addition to working out the bugs of building completely on my own, I had to purchase or construct all of the tools, jigs, necessary to put the guitar together. Very challenging, but you can’t have too many tools!
Style: Dreadnaught
Soundboard: 3A Sitka Spruce
Back/Sides: Indian Rosewood
Neck: Honduran Mahogany (Made from scratch from stock lumber)
Headstock Veneer: Indian Rosewood
Fingerboard: African Ebony
Bridge: Indian Ebony
Rosette: Plastic Herringbone
Bindings: White/Black Plastic w/ BWB purfling
Headstock Inlay: Abalone Shell
End Wedge and Heel Cap: Blue stain pine!
This instrument posed a big challenge because the recipient (my brother-in-law) requested the dragon headstock inlay. Even though I had never done anything this intricate, I plunged in and have to admit it turned out better than I could have imagined. Another beautiful and vibrant guitar that will surely become a family heirloom. The rosewood back is particularly striking.
